Jazz Night at East Glos Friday 9th May
By Di Pierce

The Jazz night last Friday was a great success. The weather was kind so some could sit outside.

The band, J.B Jazz and Blues Band played from 7.30 till 11 with one small break. The music was great, it wasn’t too loud and everyone could have a chat at the same time. In actual fact two people didn’t stop talking all night as you can see from the photo of Judith Cornish-Trestrail and Angela Fraser.

It was good to see Steve Osborne and his wife back at the Club after an absence of several years. The food was tasty the wine flowed people danced all night and I think the 70 odd people who were there thoroughly enjoyed themselves

Update: "Project Smart" Online court booking
By Julian Wellings, Project Manager

To recap:
We told you previously that we had put on hold our plans to use the provider we presented to you at last year's AGM - Globus Data. Although they are a credible provider with many successful implementations a major issue which came to light after the AGM was the product's inability to interface with our existing membership database and associated business processes.
At the same time our existing database provider Club Systems told us they were developing an online booking product of their own. This would be a much easier and less risky implementation requiring no work rounds.

Update:
Club Systems (CS) have been beta testing the product with some of their golf club customers. The beta testing has taken longer than expected although the results look promising. CS have now told us when the beta testing is complete they will launch the product initially with golf club customers which account for the majority of their client base. This is something we were not made aware of previously.
CS were unable to give me a best case scenario on when they expect to launch with rackets club customers.
After numerous emails and phone calls to CS I finally made contact with their managing director who said he expects they will be able to launch the product by September at the latest although he did end his email with the words "but don't hold me to that".
At that point we hope to be able to evaluate the product and carry out due diligence. We have provided CS with a required specifications list which they say their product can meet, but clearly we must evaluate the actual product before committing further.
We still believe this is ther best option because of the integration concerns with the Globus product and the degree of workrounds we would need to instigate. Apologies for these further delays.

Social tennis
improvement project - "SOCTAG"

From the Executive Committee
At its meeting on Wednesday 7 May, the Executive Committee gave its support to the social tennis project (SOCTAG) and gave approval for a £2000 expenditure on the project.  These funds had originally been allocated in the 2008 tennis budget for 'new member induction' prior to SOCTAG being conceived.

However the Executive did not approve a request from the project team for a further £3100 for several reasons:

  1. No allocation had been made for this project in the 2008 expenditure plan.
  2. At present membership renewals, and therefore income, are below budget.  Any surpluses, which at present are also likely to be below budget, are targeted for use on major planned projects (e.g. clay courts) that impact the majority of members rather than activities that affect a particular group of members;
  3. Reflecting feedback from members this additional expenditure, and particularly payment of a fee to a project manager, was deemed inappropriate and unnecessary.
Using the well proven principle of "he/she who plays, pays" the Executive suggested that the project team could explore alternative funding methods to cover the cost of ITF gradings if necessary.

Grass Courts now open

Once again grounds staff Stuart Dominey and Paul Dean have done us proud. We're very fortunate to be able to play on some of the best grass courts in the UK.

Last May we produced a video in which Stuart took us on a tour of the EG grounds and explained what's involved in the upkeep of the various playing surfaces.

It's very interesting and well worth watching. Click here to see it.
Please note the comments made regarding the future of the clay courts were made a year ago and have been superceded by recent developments. See your Annual Report booklet for the latest information.
