87th Cheltenham Open Tournament roundup

The Cheltenham Open (formerly the Cheltenham Junior Open) is a major annual tournament which has been running at East Glos since 1930, and is sponsored by Autovillage.

Referee Simon Corbishley writes: The weather has been kind so far, with hardly any wind, mild temperatures and a few glimpses of the sun.

90 players were involved on Tuesday with the courts full from 8:30 am with plenty of high quality matches.

The pick of these were Guy Mobey v Aaron Osmond (pictured below left) in the 18&U boys, Guy Mobey (again) v Zach Webb in the final of the 18&U, Aaron Osmond v Zach Webb in the Men’s  Open and Amy Leather v Eleanor Nobbs in the final of the 14&U girls.

A key highlight on the East Glos front was James Findlay reaching the final of the 14&U boys. This was a really close contest with Edred Opie which eventually went the way of the Wiltshire player  2-6 7-5 10-7.

The 10&U boys event threw up an all Gloucestershire final between Ellison Minnaar and Sam Austin. A topsy-turvy match developed with Sam closing it out 4-0 1-4 10-8.

Thursday saw qualifying taking place for the 16&U and 12&U events and the continuation of the Open competition.

A packed schedule is in place for today (Friday) with semi-finals and finals taking place tomorrow, 22nd April.  Everyone is welcome to come and spectate some quality tennis from some of the best junior players in the region.
