Major East Glos tournament draws to a close

The annual Cheltenham Junior Open Tennis Tournament took place at East Glos Club from 5th to 11th April. The event was sponsored by local motor dealer Autovillage.

This long-established tournament has been running for 85 years and this year attracted 302 entries, with juniors from 32 counties taking part.

Gloucestershire was very well represented, with wins for seven players.

Megan Webb (Wotton-under-Edge) won the 18&U girls event with Sam Austin (Oxstalls) winning the 8&U boys event.

East Glos player Aaron Osmond and partner James Holden (St Peters) won the 14U boys doubles event. Aaron was also runner up in the 14&U boys event, and along the way he first overcame a strong opponent from Norfolk and then the number one seed in the semi-finals.

Cobi Ho (Gloucester) and partner Oliver Palmer (St Peters) won the 18&U boys event against Ben Reid (Gloucester) and Jasper Richardson (East Glos). Cobi also reached the final of the 18&U boys event with a first set which lasted 80 minutes and which was decided on a tie break 9-7.

There was also and all Gloucestershire final in the Open event with Sam Tullett (Brockworth) and Oliver Palmer (St Peters). Sam edged it 6-3 7-6.

Tournament organiser Simon Corbishley says “We enjoyed a great week of high standard tennis played in unbroken sunshine. When the weather is like this the scene here at East Glos can’t be beaten. It was pleasing to see that entries have been a little up on last year and that Gloucestershire players have given a good account of themselves.”
