Nathan Lake almost causes major upset at World Squash Championships

East Glos coach and squash professional Nathan Lake qualified on Wednesday for his first ever World Open main draw.

He beat Belgium’s Jan Van Den Herrewegen 11/9, 11/6, 11/7 at the World Squash Championships, being held in Cairo.

Playing in the first round yesterday he took a two-game lead over fourth seed Karim Abdel Gawad before the on-form Egyptian responded to avoid the potential shock, taking the match 9-11, 9-11, 11-7, 11-3, 11-6 (63m).

Nathan (pictured below left) said “I went in with a game plan, but obviously I was against it as he is one of the top four in the world!

“I tried and treated it like any other game, and played well in the first two games. I thought I handled the pressure points really well. He was probably feeling the pressure in the beginning, he was a bit slow I thought and a bit edgy.

“I’m happy with the way I battled in the end, and I learned a lot from losing in that situation.”
