County squash juniors compete on national stage against tough opposition

By Mark Toseland, East Glos squash manager

Gloucestershire’s squash juniors pulled out all the strings to bring out their best performances for last weekend’s Junior Inter-county Championship finals held in Sheffield.

The Gu17 finished second in the plate competition, having great competitive battles against Surrey & Warwickshire, winning them 2-1. They then had a final match against a strong Northumbria, unfortunately losing out 3-0.

The Bu15 had a tough first-round battle against Yorkshire and, unfortunately, lost 4 matches to 1. This saw us take on Kent to aim for a 5/6 playoff place in the final round. They beat Kent comfortably 4 matches to 1, which set us up for a great battle against Northumbria. The East Glos trio in the fixture really stepped up to take the win 3-2 in matches and saw Gloucestershire finishing fifth.

The Bu13 had another tough first-round battle against Yorkshire, which saw us then take on Middlesex in the second round. Unfortunately, both matches were lost 4 to 1, setting us up for a 7/8 playoff fixture against revisiting Wales. Once again, Gloucestershire managed to win the fixture 3-2 to finish seventh and get a second win over Wales within the same season.

Congratulations to everyone who took part. We’re very proud of your efforts, as well as how you carried yourselves on and off court throughout the weekend.
