Junior Squash Mavericks exhibit best performances in Silver event

By Mark Toseland, Squash Manager

Last weekend, the East Glos Junior Mavericks took a trip to Warwickshire for a Silver level tournament.

This event saw some of the best performances by everyone, including the highest placed finishing for a Silver level event.

Some incredible matches were played, the weekend’s highlights being between fellow East Glos members Sam Terrell and Harry Wallace on the Kenilworth Squash club show court. They’re best friends off the court and great characters around the club. This was a gladiatorial match that even Maximus Decimus Meridius would have been proud of.

Every point was fought for, every shot thought-out, with passionate emotions simmering with the utmost respect for each other as mates on the court. It went the way of Sam in the fifth after an outrageous battle ending in the following score line: 10-12, 12-10, 11-8/10,12/11-8.

There was rapturous applause from the crowd as the match ended. Well done to you both on a superb performance!

Harry Bloomfield seems to puts fear into his opposition before his matches even start after both his Sunday opponents conceded walkovers for reasons we cannot understand.

They incurred no injuries from their previous matches, so we can only put it down to the fact that Harry is back in these Silver events, and it’s sending his opposition quaking in their boots.

There were outstanding performances from Harry in the lead-up to Sunday, and it was unfortunate that he didn’t get to face his opponents on court.

Rosa Gray received a helpful draw earnt by previous results, which saw her into the second round against Renata Colabella, the strong #2 seed who was the eventual winner.

After a great fight, Rosa was shown how well the game could be played by her highly-seeded opponent. She learnt a lot from that match which stood her in good stead for her last two matches.

She won both 3-2 and 3-0 to finish a very respectable thirteenth out of 26, which is remarkable considering she’s only been playing squash for 14 months.

Henry Surridge made his highest finish in a Silver event after being seeded to finish between (5/8). He went above and beyond, finishing in a very close fight, losing out narrowly 12-10 in the 5th game and ending up 4th overall.

A steely determination and in-the-moment thinking provided the backdrop to his performances. Battle-crunching matches against higher seeds and well-known strong juniors on the Bu13 circuit saw Henry take himself up to the semi-finals to show what he’s made of.

Well done, Henry; these were great efforts to take yourself to your highest Silver finish.

This is excellent news for our club sponsors who have supported East Glos and county events over the years. Your t-shirts are being worn by participants who have played in our events that are not from our county.

There was lots of chat about the new county t-shirts, with people saying how great they look. Thank you for your continued support: Nick Griffith Estate Agents; Focus Networks; AMPM 247; SW Parker Construction; RockWealth; Safran.
